Customvue Approved for High Myopia – Nearsightedness

FDA-APPROVED VISX Advanced CustomVueâ„¢

LASIK Customvue for near-sightedness

San Leandro, CA on October 31, 2006 – Dr. Stephen Turner, MD of the Turner Eye Institute in San Jose, San Francisco, San Leandro and Concord, California announced today that it now offers the Advanced CustomVue™ wavefront guided LASIK laser vision correction procedure for treating high myopia (up to 11.0 diopters of correction), with or without astigmatism. As a result of FDA approval in 2005, the Advanced CustomVue LASIK procedure can now potentially be used to treat more than 94 percent of the eligible population*, 21 years of age or older. The Advanced CustomVue wavefront driven LASIK eye surgery procedure offers precise measuring and individually tailored treatments potentially capable of correcting nearsightedness from -6 up to -11 diopters, a condition that can present significant day-to-day challenges. Without LASIK treatment, patients with high myopia are typically dependent on glasses or contact lenses at all times. Results submitted to the FDA from the clinical trial showed that after six months, more than 98.3 percent of high myopia patients treated with the Advanced CustomVue LASIK procedure achieved 20/40 or better vision, without glasses or contact lenses, 84 percent achieved 20/20 or better, and 65 percent achieved 20/16 or better.**

“We’re always delighted to help patients see more clearly,” said Dr. Turner, “but being able to help severely nearsighted patients is especially gratifying. These are patients who’ve often worn glasses since grade school and whose vision problems are severe enough to restrict their activities. With the Advanced CustomVue™ procedure, these patients have the potential to experience their Personal Best Vision™. That’s extremely exciting.”

The Advanced CustomVue LASIK procedure is a product of AMO USA, the home of VISXâ„¢ Technology. VISX, the inventor of LASIK and laser vision correction, has the broadest range of FDA approvals and leads the industry in numbers of wavefront-guided LASIK laser vision correction procedures performed.

How the Advanced CustomVue Procedure Can Help Eliminate High Myopia

Treatment for high myopia uses the WaveScan WaveFront™ system that identifies and measures imperfections in a patient’s eyes 25 times more precisely than standard measurements for glasses or contact lenses. The WaveScan™ System transfers the digital data to the VISX™ STAR S4 IR™ Excimer Laser, which is used to perform the Advanced CustomVue procedure. This combined technology enables doctors to tailor a distinct correction specific to the unique characteristics of each individual eye.

“We’re especially pleased with the ability to correct for astigmatism at the same time,” continued Dr. Stephen Turner. “Patients with high myopia are often dealing with astigmatism that make correction difficult to achieve with glasses and contact lenses. The Advanced CustomVue LASIK procedure could dramatically improve life for these patients.”
Additional Patient Benefits

For the past several years, physicians around the world have used the Advanced CustomVue procedure to tailor a distinct correction for each patient based on the unique characteristics of their eyes – resulting in Personal Best Vision. Earlier, the FDA approved VISX Iris Registration Technology as a non-contact method of aligning the treatment to the cornea, providing greater laser alignment accuracy for the Advanced CustomVue procedure.
