Lasik Surgeon - Michael Furlong, M.D.

Dr. Michael Furlong has been serving patients in San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and the greater San Francisco Bay Area for more than a decade. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in regular and bladeless Custom Wavefront LASIK, PRK, ICL phakic IOL implants, multifocal lens implants and cataract surgery with advanced lenses. He also treats glaucoma, growths in and around the eye minor and major eye injuries, abrasions, infections or allergies, dry or watery eyes, flashes and floaters, macular degeneration and eye problems related to diabetes.

He established Furlong Vision Correction in 1998 and joined the Turner Eye Institute in 2011. To date he has performed over 30,000 refractive and small-incision cataract surgeries for residents of San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area. He is also among the first doctors in the nation to perform CK, a non-laser vision treatment designed to treat presbyopia, or "aging eyes." Dr. Furlong employs the highest level of technology available, including the NASA approved combination of the VISX Advanced CustomVue wavefront-guided laser and the IntraLase Femtosecond.

Dr. Furlong works with each patient personally throughout the entire vision correction process to determine the best procedure to give patients their best vision. Dr. Furlong has received many awards for his outstanding performance in refractive surgery, including being chosen as one of the top 5 Surgeons nationwide out of 920 LVCI refractive surgeons and named one of San Jose's "Top Doctors" each year since 2000 by his peers. Furlong Vision Correction was voted the best place for LASIK in the Silicon Valley in the 2010 and 2011 Mercury News Reader's Choice Awards. He is well-respected among the optometry and medical communities in San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Furlong's Background

A graduate of Stanford University, Dr. Furlong earned his MD at the University of Hawaii, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. Following medical school, he completed a three-year residency in the ophthalmology program at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center, one of the most competitive surgical training programs in the country. He elected to further his formal education with a one-year refractive surgery and corneal fellowship at the prestigious Gimbel Eye Center, where he studied under Dr. Howard Gimbel, one of the world's leading authorities on refractive surgery. Dr. Furlong is one of only a handful of surgeons nationwide with this type of specialized training.

Dr. Furlong has co-authored several articles and book chapters on refractive surgery and has presented his research at national ophthalmology conferences. He has trained ophthalmologists in Thailand and China in the most current refractive surgery techniques and continues to teach about the latest advances by offering regular continuing education courses to other medical professionals in San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area.
